Our frameless rooflight is designed to offer a sleek, modern aesthetic with a simple installation process suitable for experienced roofers or builders. This step-by-step guide provides all necessary information to ensure safe and proper fitting of your unit.
Measuring the Structural Opening
Before ordering, you’ll need accurate measurements of your structural opening.
- Allow a 5–10mm tolerance around the structural opening to ensure a comfortable fit.
- For example, a 1000mm x 1000mm frameless rooflight will have:
- Bottom glass pane size: 1000mm x 1000mm
- Recommended structural opening: 1010mm x 1010mm
- External rooflight size will measure: 1200mm x 1200mm (top pane visible from above)
- Upstand Dimensions: 50–65mm wide and 100mm high minimum
The top pane features a 100mm black border to create a clean edge and hide support elements.
Preparing the Roof Upstand
Ensure a timber upstand is installed to support the rooflight. This should be:
- Minimum 100mm above roof level
- Pitch angle of at least 5° to promote water runoff and prevent pooling
- Properly insulated and waterproofed with roofing membrane
Ensure a minimum 30mm overhang of the top glass beyond the upstand on all sides for a frameless floating effect.
Fitting the Frameless Rooflight
- Apply Silicone
- Apply continuous DOWSIL 791 weatherproofing silicone sealant on the top of the weatherproofed upstand.
- Use setting blocks to ensure minimum 3mm sealant thickness.
- A primer maybe required to certain upstand weatherproofing.
- Position the Top Glass Pane
- Carefully lower the glass onto the upstand.
- Apply even pressure around the overhang to ensure the silicone spreads and forms a watertight seal.
- Ensure continuous contact of silicone between glass and upstand. Use a silicone tool to neaten excess sealant.
- Secure the Bottom Pane
- The bottom pane should sit into the structural opening with sufficient clearance all round.
- Apply DOWSIL 791 weatherproofing silicone sealant between the bottom pane the internal finish/plasterboard to provide support.
Common mistakes to avoid when installing rooflights:
- Choosing the Wrong Type of Rooflight: Not all rooflights are suitable for every roof type. Ensure you select the right rooflight for your specific roof structure
- Incorrect Measurements: Accurate measurements are crucial. Even a small error can lead to leaks and structural issues
- Ignoring Building Regulations: Always check and comply with local building regulations to avoid legal issues and ensure safety
- Incorrect weatherproofing silicone sealant: Lower grade silicone sealants can be incompatible with the seals of the rooflight, which can cause them to react and allow condensation to form inside the cavity of the rooflight. Only DOWSIL 791 weatherproofing sealant should be used.
- Insufficient glazing slope: Installing the rooflight completely flat or on at a very shallow angle will not allow rainwater to runoff and will pool on the glass.
- Inadequate Waterproofing: Proper sealing and flashing are essential to prevent water leakage and damage.
Energy-Efficient Aluminium Frames & Glass Options
Our aluminium frames include a built-in thermal break, creating an insulated barrier that helps prevent heat loss and reduces condensation. This keeps your space warmer in winter, cooler in summer, and more energy-efficient overall.

Frequently asked questions
Why Choose Our Fixed Framed Rooflight?
Our Fixed Framed Rooflight is a strong, stylish, and high-performance option designed to flood your space with natural light. The sleek design enhances any room, while the high-quality glass adds a modern and elegant touch. Plus, it has been rigorously tested for long-term durability, giving you complete peace of mind.
How Much Glass Will Be Visible?
These rooflights are installed on a builder’s upstand, which is a timber frame built on the roof. The amount of visible glass depends on how large the upstand is.
- Recommended upstand width: 80mm
- Internal glass size: Total size minus 160mm
For example, if you order a 1000mm x 1000mm rooflight, your visible glass area will be 840mm x 840mm. Speak to our team about fitting guide for more details.
Do I Need Tinted Glass?
This depends on your lighting needs and personal preference:
- If the room already gets a lot of natural light, tinted glass can reduce glare and heat build-up.
- If you prefer maximum brightness, clear glass may be the best option.
Is This Rooflight Suitable for Commercial Use?
Yes, our Framed Rooflights can be used in commercial buildings. However, we strongly recommend checking the product against your project’s specifications. Any commercial project should have a responsible individual for final approval—feel free to share our product link with them.
